Raku

The process of creating Raku ware is through a low temperature firing, that results in some incredible colours and patterning on clay vessels. The original Raku technique is of Japanese origin which took red hot vessels straight from the kiln and cooled them in open air, although the Western method uses a reduction technique where the hot vessel is placed and sealed in a drum of combustable materials, such as sawdust, which stains any exposed clay black with smoke.

The resulting wares are rich in patina, and although not foodsafe or watertight, are sculptural and unique pieces to enjoy.

It’s an incredible hands on experience to learn the firing process and see how the pieces come out, each and every one has a different look and feel. Really looking forward to experimenting with this process more in the future.
