Midnight series

In the darkness before the dawn
In the swirling of this storm
When I'm rolling with the punches and hope is gone
Leave a light, a light on

Millions of miles from home
In the swirling swimming on
When I'm rolling with the thunder but bleed from thorns
Leave a light, a light on

Coldplay ‘Midnight’ lyrics

I still remember travelling around Scotland with Coldplay on repeat, because that’s the one CD we brought with us to take Scotts parents on a tiki-tour around the UK. Pottery for us has been something that has taken us through several phases of our lives. From our darkest midnight depths, to a place we find light and joy. It’s helped us through transitional times, and made us focus on the NOW (because when you don’t it all goes horribly wrong when you are throwing on the wheel!)

So this is our tribute to the those light and shade times, the ones where you are searching out forms in the moonlight, looking for the beauty that can be found in them (admittedly belatedly in some cases ) and the experience of just finding your way from whatever light that is cast onto surfaces and forms. We love the blue hue of moonlight and the way you rely on the texture beneath your feet to guide you.

In terms of ceramics, well its a honed black clay on the exteriors, glazed in either a tenmoku tea-dust glaze or a variable blue glaze, these are probably our most variable pieces. We never know just how they will come out of the fire and tribulation of the kiln. But when they do, it is poetic and powerful indeed to see their transformation. Every piece is unique.
